And so the photographic reportage becomes an intimate and silent dialogue between photographer and Maestro, a direct and engaging black-and-white anthropological narrative that allows the viewer to immerse themselves in real, authentic, and detailed environments, to come face to face with stages and squares, laboratories and workshops, workshops and factories, fields and quarries, docks and construction sites. Photography, naked, alive, tangible.

Dantès – (www.dantesfoto.it)
is a Tuscan photographer, author of photographic exhibitions and publications such as “Vissi d’Arte,” “L’Occhio del Tempo,” “Gli Ultimi Pescatori,” “Wabi Sabi,” “Regeneration,” “Sulle Ali della Libertà,” and “L’Uomo, Terra e la Natura,” as well as important reportages and editorial and artistic collaborations with Alberto Angela, Ulisse, PhotoLux, Rizzoli, Hahnemühle, Mondadori, Focus, LuccaCrea, and many others.

For several years, he has devoted himself almost exclusively to reportage, understood as visual narrative, predominantly in black and white, developing themes dear to him and maintaining only a few particularly notable editorial and artistic collaborations, such as with the prestigious Hahnemühle GmbH, with which he entered into an “Artistic Partnership” in 2023, and with PhotoLux.

His photographs have been exhibited at Photopia in Hamburg at the Hahnemühle booth alongside prestigious names in international photography.

“Tempus edax rerum” – Time devours everything. (Orazio, 65 BC)

This Latin phrase by the writer and poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus, better known as Horace, describes in just three words the essence of reportage and what the artist conveys through his photographic research.

With his shots, Dantès immortalizes what remains of those places of history, tradition, and culture, but above all, he captures the artistic and poetic trait of accepting transience and imperfection that sees them still full of meaning and majesty, yet inexorably eroded by the passage of time.

It’s hard to believe, but all the photographs below were taken within the province of Lucca over the past 20 years. A clever interplay of perspectives, colors, and light makes the shots seem to have been taken in the most exotic corners of the planet.

The long “Green Serpent” and “The Ancient Wall” are just 5 km from the center of Lucca, “Atlantide” is a stone’s throw from Versilia, and “La Maison de Fils” is incredibly just a few hundred meters from Lucca’s city walls.

These are the places forgotten by God, despite many of them being dedicated to his worship, with frescoes, sculptures, and altars devoured by time, thanks to the complicity of Mother Nature, who has forcefully reclaimed her spaces.

“Everyone is so afraid of time and how it makes things disappear, but that’s why we are photographers, right? We are conservatives by nature; we take photos to freeze time and entrust individual moments to eternity. Human nature made tangible. That’s a good definition of what art means. ” By Kodachrome film – Mark Raso
